Taiwan Celebrities Criticise Singaporean English |
|
I don't feel the video's too offending(after all, some of them are true. And whats worse? The rebutting comments(at the youtube video) are ... in Singlish! Alamak), they are just the few twists different groups of billugists around the world has brought to the English Language :) BTW, they didn't talked at all about Singlish, just some pronouciations stumpers. The 'dance', if you pronouce it with a 't' in front, 'ks' at the back, shouldn't be a problem. As for 'pregnant', I tried saying to myself umpteen times, I can't imagine what other word it can be mistaken as. That is not an entirely pronounciation problem. When we are being asked something, we somehow have some expectation what the question might be about in a certain situation. In this case, a tourist won't expect a custom officer to ask if she is expecting, so when she 'processes' his/her question, in her mind, she would find words, does he/she means 'pendant' or some other similar-sounding words? Add to that volume(speaking too soft), slangs, everything adds up to this cute misuderstanding :) I personally feel Singlish isn't bad. We can use it among ourselves, no problem and yes it feels friendier, but we MUST be able to switch to listenable/understandable English. It can be an optional national language if need be, but never supercede the English language. |
